The UK government has introduced new legislation, 'The Iran (Sanctions) (Amendment) Regulations 2026', aimed at tackling Iranian nuclear activity and other hostile actions. The Minister for the Middle East, Stephen Doughty MP, confirmed the legislation was laid in Parliament today, 8 September 2026.
These new regulations will amend The Iran (Sanctions) Regulations 2023 and The Iran (Sanctions) (Nuclear) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019. The measures are broadly those that were lifted as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, and are intended to constrain Iran's nuclear ambitions.
The legislation introduces expanded financial measures to limit Iran's access to the UK financial system and its ability to raise funds for its nuclear programme. Trade prohibitions will also be extended to additional goods, technology, and services, including those vital to industries contributing to Iranian nuclear escalation, such as energy, software, metals, and gold. Related activities like shipping, insurance, and banking will also be affected. Furthermore, Iranian aircraft will be prohibited from landing in the UK, subject to certain exemptions, and powers to sanction ships linked to Iran's nuclear programme will be strengthened.
The government stated that Iran's lack of transparency regarding its nuclear programme poses a serious threat to international peace and security, noting Iran's accumulation of over 400kg of uranium enriched to 60%. The UK remains committed to a diplomatic solution to ensure Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon.
