As tensions persist in Eastern Europe, Prime Minister Keir Starmer's leadership on a £37bn European initiative to bolster deep precision strike capabilities has sparked renewed optimism about NATO's collective defence posture. At the recent NATO Summit in Ankara, Mr Starmer convened 12 nations to outline an ambitious plan that will see more than £37 billion invested over the next decade. The UK is at the forefront of this endeavour, having already pledged £3 billion by 2030 through its Defence Investment Plan.
The initiative will focus on developing and deploying advanced long-range precision weapons, capable of striking targets with pinpoint accuracy from distances ranging from 300 kilometres to beyond 2000 kilometres. By enhancing these deep precision strike assets, European allies aim to drastically improve their ability to project power and deter aggression, thereby bolstering NATO's resilience against potential adversaries.
The UK has already demonstrated its commitment to this capability through collaborations with Germany on stealth and hypersonic weapons projects, as well as working with France and Italy on 'Stratus', a successor to the Storm Shadow missile. The latter trilateral project, which supports over 1,300 jobs in the UK at MBDA facilities in Stevenage and Bolton, is receiving £1.4 billion in UK investment over the next four years.
Prime Minister Starmer's emphasis on deepening European cooperation is underlined by his determination to ensure the safety of the UK and its allies through a stronger, more European-focused NATO. He highlighted that this initiative will intensify collaboration, accelerating technological advancements and industrial partnerships – ultimately speeding up the development and deployment of crucial NATO capabilities.
The move comes as the effectiveness of long-range systems has been starkly demonstrated on the battlefield in Ukraine, where such strikes have significantly impacted Russia's ability to sustain its offensives by degrading enemy forces far behind the frontline. The programme will also place deep precision strike at the forefront of NATO's defence agenda for the coming year.
As part of this initiative, participating European allies will share expertise and accelerate technological advancements, ultimately speeding up the development and deployment of crucial NATO capabilities. This will build upon national efforts by fostering greater collaboration and deeper industrial partnerships – a key aspect of the UK's Defence Investment Plan. The programme is set to be a cornerstone of NATO's defence agenda for the coming year.
