The United Kingdom has taken a leading role in addressing the global issue of violence against women and girls, announcing the formation of a new international coalition at the UN Human Rights Council's annual discussion on women's rights. Delivered by Kumar Iyer, the UK's Permanent Representative to the WTO and UN, the joint statement highlighted the pervasive nature of such violence, noting that an estimated one in three women worldwide will experience physical and/or sexual violence during their lifetime.
This new International Coalition to End Violence against Women and Girls brings together a diverse group of nations, including Australia, Brazil, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Jamaica, Morocco, Spain, and South Africa. The coalition's primary objective is to collaborate on preventing all forms of gender-based violence, encompassing both online and offline manifestations, to ensure women and girls can live free from fear, regardless of their location or background.
Through this collaborative effort, the participating countries aim to accelerate action by bolstering national responses, facilitating the sharing of expertise and best practices, and enhancing global leadership in the fight against gender-based violence. Key aspects of their strategy include preventing violence from occurring, protecting victims and survivors, and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.
Furthermore, the coalition will dedicate efforts to strengthening global initiatives aimed at preventing sexual violence in conflict zones and other forms of violence that emerge during humanitarian crises, a concern that has gained increasing urgency amidst escalating global conflicts. The statement underscored that sustained political leadership and a multi-stakeholder approach are crucial for achieving meaningful progress in this area.
The UK and its partners have called upon all states to intensify their efforts to eradicate gender-based violence. This includes scaling up evidence-based prevention and response activities, alongside ensuring robust accountability mechanisms are in place for all perpetrators.
