The UK has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine's recovery and energy security with a new £290 million package. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper announced the support at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk, Poland, where she met with Ukrainian and international leaders to discuss the country's ongoing reconstruction efforts.
As part of the package, the UK has signed a £210 million deal with UK-based Urenco to provide nuclear fuel to Ukraine's national power company Energoatom. This will help Ukraine to resist Russian attacks on critical energy infrastructure and keep the lights on. The deal will also benefit the British economy, as Urenco employs over 650 people in the UK and its Chester site supports over 4,500 jobs in the wider supply chain.
Funding will also be allocated to modernise Ukraine's justice system, including schemes to improve court proceedings, tackle corruption, and build systems that hold perpetrators of war crimes to account. This will help to improve fairness and transparency in the justice system and ensure that those responsible for heinous crimes are brought to justice.
The UK's total commitment to supporting Ukraine's non-military needs now stands at £5.6 billion since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. The new package is a further demonstration of the UK's commitment to backing Ukraine's long-term prosperity and security.
