The United Kingdom has announced a contribution of $90 million this year to aid Syria's recovery plans and address the needs of displaced and vulnerable populations. This commitment comes as the UK reiterates its support for Syria's journey towards long-term stability and recovery.
Ambassador Kate Foster, UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, stated that the UK is prepared to support the complete and verified destruction of Assad-era chemical weapons and the full implementation of Syria's obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
The UK also expressed concern over reports of ongoing violence in Northeast Syria and urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid inflammatory rhetoric. Furthermore, the UK called on Israel to set out a timeline for withdrawal from recently occupied Syrian territory, citing concerns that Israel's actions, including Prime Minister Netanyahu's recent visit to Mount Hermon, risk increasing tensions.
Dialogue and negotiation are encouraged as the only sustainable path forward, with respect for Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence deemed essential for long-term stability.
