British politics has seen an increasing reliance on funding from individual billionaires, with a surge in large donations to UK political parties over the past two parliaments. Research indicates that a total of £179 million has been donated by wealthy individuals since 2019.
Figures from the IPPR thinktank highlight the growing influence of significant financial contributions in Westminster, particularly a rise in donations exceeding £1 million. Between 2019 and 2025, the average annual amount donated by individuals giving over £1 million increased to £13.1 million, which is almost three-and-a-half times the £3.9 million annual average recorded between 2001 and 2018.
The research also found that 72% of all individual donations of £1 million or more since records began have been made since 2019. This trend has prompted concerns about the influence of a small number of wealthy individuals, with some Labour MPs advocating for an annual cap on donations.
The government has recently committed to addressing the issue of mega-donors having an outsized influence on politics and has already implemented a £100,000 annual cap for donations from overseas voters. Proposals for a cap are expected to be tabled when the current elections bill reaches the House of Lords this autumn.
