The United Kingdom has voiced deep concern over the systematic repression of fundamental freedoms in Belarus during the 63rd Human Rights Council in Geneva. A UK statement highlighted ongoing issues including arbitrary arrest and detention, politically motivated prosecutions, torture, and ill-treatment, which are described as tools to silence dissent.
The statement also noted that independent media, civil society, and trade unions in Belarus continue to face severe restrictions. While welcoming the recent release of some political prisoners, the UK emphasised that these releases do not address the underlying structures enabling repression, and many individuals remain unjustly detained.
The UK called for the immediate and unconditional release of all remaining political prisoners, along with full rehabilitation and access to effective remedy. Particular concern was raised regarding the continued use of incommunicado detention, denial of adequate medical care, and intimidation of prisoners' families. The United Kingdom reiterated its support for the UN's accountability mandates and the International Accountability Platform for Belarus, which collects evidence of alleged crimes under international law.
