The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the 2016 Peace Agreement in Colombia, a landmark accord now celebrating its tenth anniversary. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, Ambassador Kate Foster, UK Chargé d’Affaires to the UN, highlighted the significant achievements made towards peace and stability for the Colombian people over the past decade.
Ambassador Foster extended congratulations to Colombia on its recent presidential elections, commending all involved – including electoral authorities, security forces, and the Colombian populace – for a peaceful and transparent democratic process. The UK expressed its eagerness to collaborate closely with President-elect de la Espriella and his incoming administration, which is set to take office on 7 August 2026.
Despite the progress, particularly in areas such as rural reform and the reintegration of former combatants, the UK acknowledged the ongoing and significant security challenges detailed in the UN Secretary General’s report. These include serious human rights abuses and escalating criminality perpetrated by armed groups. Concerns were also raised regarding the continued killings and harassment of signatories to the 2016 agreement, human rights defenders, and community leaders.
Furthermore, the statement noted the recent increase in coca cultivation, cocaine production, illegal mining, and environmental degradation across Colombia. The UK underscored that implementing the 2016 Peace Agreement remains central to addressing these complex issues, advocating for a comprehensive and sustainable approach to delivering peace, security, and stabilisation throughout the country.
Key areas of focus for continued implementation include rural reform, political participation, the effective reintegration of former combatants, robust efforts to counter illicit drugs, and a sustained response to the needs of victims. These initiatives are deemed crucial, especially within Colombia’s rural and conflict-affected communities, to ensure that all citizens can ultimately benefit from the dividends of peace. The UK reiterated its commitment to supporting Colombia on its journey towards lasting peace, recognising the UN Verification Mission as an essential mechanism for international support over the past decade.
