UK retail sales experienced a 0.5% fall in July, as reported by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). This contrasts with a 1% increase recorded in June.
The decline was partly attributed to a drop in non-food sales, with retailers reportedly moving promotions to June due to hot weather. The ONS noted "evidence of reduced promotions in July" among household goods and clothing retailers.
However, shops selling alcoholic drinks and beverages saw strong performance. This was attributed to promotions, the hot weather, and the World Cup, according to the ONS.
ONS chief economist Grant Fitzner stated that retail sales increased over the latest three months, with growth in all main sectors except motor fuel. He added that some retailers linked hot weather and promotions to increased sales of outdoor products, fans, clothing, and online sports merchandise.
