The UK's sweltering summer is set for a brief reprieve this week, but don't get too comfortable - experts warn another heatwave is just around the corner. The Met Office forecasts a settled start to the week, with temperatures moderating across all four nations before soaring back up by the weekend.
For the early and mid-week period, most of England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland can expect a mix of sunshine and cloud, with highs ranging from 20-23°C in southern England. This is a welcome relief for many, allowing for more comfortable conditions for daily activities. In contrast to previous weeks, there's a reduced likelihood of extremely high temperatures.
However, the respite won't last long. The Met Office predicts a build-up of high pressure from late Thursday onwards, bringing a return to hotter weather. By Friday and into the weekend, southern and eastern England are likely to experience heatwave thresholds, with daily maximums potentially reaching the low 30s Celsius.
Regional variations will be notable, but it's not all doom and gloom - parts of northern England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland may escape some of the worst of the heat. Even so, the Met Office advises caution, warning that still conditions could make temperatures feel even higher than they actually are.
The public is urged to stay vigilant in light of the returning high temperatures. To stay safe, drink plenty of water, seek shade during peak sun hours (11 am-3 pm), and wear loose-fitting clothing. Those with underlying health conditions, the elderly, and young children should take extra precautions due to their increased vulnerability to heat-related illnesses.
