The UK's idyllic autumnal spell is set to give way to increasingly wet and windy conditions from Wednesday onwards, with a series of frontal systems bringing widespread rain and stronger winds across the country. The Met Office has updated its forecast, warning of potential disruption as the unsettled weather takes hold.
Forecasters anticipate that the change will manifest regionally, with England's South West and North West experiencing the heaviest rainfall and strongest gusts, potentially reaching speeds of 40-50 mph in exposed coastal areas. The Midlands and Eastern regions are also likely to experience significant precipitation, though winds may be slightly less severe.
Northern Ireland is forecast to endure a similar pattern, with persistent rain and blustery conditions becoming prevalent by Thursday. Scotland and Wales will bear the brunt of stronger winds, with gusts potentially exceeding 55 mph in some elevated and coastal locations, especially in western Scotland and parts of the Welsh mountains.
The Met Office is advising the public to prepare for these conditions, particularly those planning travel. Commuters and motorists should be aware of potential hazards such as surface water on roads, reduced visibility, and fallen branches. It is also recommended to secure any loose outdoor items and check local flood warnings.
