The UK is anticipated to experience a shift towards wetter and windier weather in late autumn and early winter, according to Met Office forecasts. Despite November approaching, the country has not yet recorded its first named storm of the season, with high pressure systems largely steering deep Atlantic lows away.
However, the Met Office predicts a growing chance of more turbulent conditions as El Niño strengthens in the Pacific. A change in the jet stream's position and strength is expected in the coming week, which could allow deeper low pressure systems to affect more parts of the UK.
This shift could mark the season's first spell of widely disruptive weather. Longer-term signals also indicate increased rainfall and storminess later in autumn and early winter. The Met Office's three-month outlook for October, November, and December forecasts double the normal chance of wetter weather and 1.3 times the normal chance of windier weather.
