UK skilled tech visa applications fall for third consecutive year

Applications from overseas tech workers for UK visas decreased by seven per cent in 2025, marking the third consecutive annual fall, despite government efforts to attract AI talent.

  • Skilled tech worker visa applications fell to 34,936 in 2025, a seven per cent drop from the previous year.
  • Applications have decreased by over a third since a peak of 53,729 in 2022.
  • The government introduced a visa reimbursement scheme and expanded the Global Talent visa earlier this year.

The number of overseas tech workers applying for UK visas has fallen for a third consecutive year. Applications from skilled tech workers dropped seven per cent to 34,936 in 2025, according to a Freedom of Information (FOI) request by consulting firm RSM UK. This figure is down from 37,376 in 2024.

Overall, applications have decreased by more than a third since reaching a high of 53,729 in 2022. This decline occurs despite ministers' stated aim to position Britain as a leader in global AI talent.

AI minister Kanishka Narayan has advocated for easier visa access for engineers and faster routes for highly skilled workers. Ben Bilsland, partner and head of technology industry at RSM UK, stated that a talent shortage is a significant challenge for the tech industry, potentially hindering growth.

Earlier this year, the government introduced a visa reimbursement scheme for eligible scale-ups in sectors including digital technology and AI, allowing them to reclaim up to £25,000 annually in immigration costs. The Global Talent visa has also been expanded to allow more businesses and research organisations to endorse specialist applicants. However, industry figures suggest that visa costs and complexity continue to disadvantage the UK against international competitors.

Why this matters: The continued decline in skilled tech visa applications raises questions about the effectiveness of the UK's immigration system in supporting the government's ambition to develop world-leading tech companies and compete in the global AI sector.
