New government data published today, 27 August 2026, reveals that nearly 172,000 solar installations have been fitted across the UK since the start of 2026. This surge follows July 2026 being the third-highest month on record for solar installations, with nearly 28,000 completed across homes, businesses, and larger-scale projects.
Rooftop solar is a significant contributor to this increase, accounting for more than 7 in 10 installations during July. Over 19,800 rooftop solar panels were installed in July alone.
The government has also released a regional breakdown, showing that solar installations have increased in every UK nation and English region over the last 12 months. The South East recorded 22,628 installations this year, taking its total to 305,101, a 14% increase since last July. Wales saw an 18% rise, Scotland grew by 14%, and the North East increased by 11%.
Energy Minister Michael Shanks stated that households across Britain are embracing solar power to generate clean, homegrown power and cut energy bills. The increase in installations coincides with plug-in solar panels becoming legal across Great Britain, with retailers including Currys, B&Q, Screwfix, and Amazon preparing to offer them.
