UK Space Agency Launches £6.2m Earth Observation Funding Call for Innovators

The UK Space Agency, in collaboration with the European Space Agency, has opened a new funding round for its InCubed programme. This initiative aims to support UK organisations developing innovative, commercially viable Earth Observation products and services.

  • Up to €7.26 million (approximately £6.2 million) is available for UK organisations.
  • The InCubed programme supports commercially viable Earth Observation solutions, not early-stage research.
  • Funding levels range from €300,000 to €4 million per project, lasting up to 18 months.
  • Proposals demonstrating clear market routes and customer engagement will be prioritised.
  • Applications close on 21 August 2026, with an informational webinar on 16 June 2026.

The UK Space Agency has issued a £6.2m funding call for innovative Earth Observation projects, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). The opportunity is designed to support companies that can demonstrate a clear path to market and commercial viability, rather than pure research.

This funding initiative forms part of the InCubed programme, which aims to bridge the gap between development and market readiness. UK organisations are encouraged to submit proposals that show strong evidence of customer engagement and a clear pathway to commercialisation, with preference given to those that can demonstrate a robust business plan.

Projects can align with either an 'Early Development Cycle' or a 'Product Development Cycle', with funding supporting a wide range of activities within the Earth Observation value chain. Individual projects are expected to last up to 18 months, and can receive funding levels ranging from €300,000 to €4 million, depending on scope and maturity.

Eligible applicants include small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which may be eligible for higher levels of support, potentially up to 80% of project costs. Larger organisations (non-SMEs) can receive funding down to approximately 50%, with the exact percentage determined by the project's risk profile and maturity.

Consortia are encouraged, including participation from non-UK entities if supported by their respective national agencies or self-funded. Research institutions and academia can also participate as part of industrially led consortia, provided they do not have a direct commercial interest in the product.

The application process involves two stages, beginning with an 'Idea Pitch' (Outline Proposal) submitted via ESA’s ORBIT platform. Successful applicants will then be invited to submit a 'Full Proposal'. An informational webinar will be held on 16 June 2026 to guide prospective applicants through the programme and application process, with applications closing on 21 August 2026.

Why this matters: This funding boost is crucial for solidifying the UK's position in the global space sector, fostering innovation, and creating high-skilled jobs. It will enable British businesses to develop cutting-edge technologies that can monitor our planet and address critical challenges.

What this means for you: What this means for you: This investment in Earth Observation technology could lead to improved weather forecasting, better climate change monitoring, and more efficient resource management, ultimately benefiting the environment and various industries across the UK.
