The UK government has released its Space Strategy this month, committing over £7.8 billion in funding to the sector by 2030. The strategy positions the space industry as a priority for the UK, recognising its importance for defence, national security, and economic growth.
The strategy aims to address a key challenge in the UK space industry: converting early-stage funding and innovation into commercialisation at a scale needed for global competitiveness. The government plans to act as an "anchor customer" for the industry, promising a more targeted approach to funding with fewer, higher-value awards.
Regulatory changes are also a focus, with commitments to make licensing faster, simpler, and cheaper, and to reduce the regulatory burden for repeat activities. The strategy also seeks to influence international frameworks and foster partnerships through organisations like NATO and the European Space Agency.
