The UK Government has unveiled a major boost to education and healthcare in war-torn Gaza, with Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper announcing plans to fund scholarships for high-achieving students to study at top UK universities. This move builds on the success of over 100 students who benefited from similar opportunities this academic year.
Under the new programme, fully funded scholarships will be awarded to talented young people from Gaza, enabling them to pursue their academic dreams and potentially become the next generation of Palestinian leaders. The UK Government has also pledged to evacuate critically ill children from Gaza, providing specialist medical support in NHS hospitals across the country. This follows a previous initiative in 2025, which saw 50 sick and injured children receive treatment in the UK.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical, with many people in urgent need of medical care. The UK Government is working closely with the World Health Organization to identify patients requiring specialist treatment in the UK, ensuring that those arriving here undergo thorough security checks and provide biometric information ahead of travel.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson highlighted the transformative power of education, saying: 'Education is a lifeline. It restores hope, unlocks potential, and builds the foundations for the future.' The UK Government's commitment to supporting Gaza students and children is a significant step towards addressing the humanitarian crisis and providing long-term solutions.
