UK-Switzerland Trade Deal Signed Amidst Tense Talks, Boosting Services Economy. The UK's services economy is set for a significant boost, with the signing of a new free trade agreement with Switzerland expected to deliver an annual £5.2 billion windfall, according to government estimates.
The pact, which marks the largest services-focused deal negotiated by the UK since Brexit, has been hailed as a major coup for British businesses and individuals operating in the Swiss market. The agreement builds on existing arrangements, initiated in 2019, which allowed British and Swiss services professionals to travel and work without visa requirements. Crucially, this provision has now been extended to include all Swiss residents, regardless of their country of origin, streamlining processes for both businesses and individuals.
Notably, the deal brings tangible benefits beyond professional mobility, including surcharge-free international roaming for UK holidaymakers and business travellers visiting Switzerland. Additionally, a parallel agreement grants UK passport holders access to electronic passport gates in Switzerland, promising smoother entry procedures for British citizens.
Trade Minister Chris Bryant acknowledged the challenging negotiations process, describing the talks as "intense" and stating that "moments were difficult." However, he emphasised the core objective was to "dramatically improve the opportunity for British businesses and Swiss businesses to trade with each other."
This latest agreement marks the sixth trade deal secured by the UK in the past two years, following agreements with nations such as India, South Korea, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. While many previous deals have focused on goods – with the India pact targeting whisky and car exports – this Swiss deal prioritises the services sector, which accounts for over 80 per cent of the UK economy.
