UK temperatures to drop significantly as cooler air arrives

The UK is set for a noticeable drop in temperatures from Tuesday, with cooler air spreading across the country and Wednesday potentially being the first day since June that temperatures remain below 20C nationwide.

  • Cooler air will sweep across the UK from the north-west starting Tuesday.
  • Temperatures are expected to fall from the low 20s to the mid-teens.
  • Wednesday could be the first day since 11 June that temperatures do not reach 20C anywhere in the UK.

After weeks of unusually warm weather, cooler air is set to move across the UK from the north-west on Tuesday, bringing a significant drop in temperatures. This change will be accompanied by a spell of rain and stronger winds.

Temperatures are expected to fall from the low 20s to the mid-teens. Northern and western areas will experience cooler conditions on Tuesday, with highs mainly in the low to mid-teens, while the south-east could still see 19-21C.

By Wednesday, the autumn chill will be firmly established, with temperatures across much of England and Wales falling into the mid-teens. Scotland could see highs of just 10-13C. This day is expected to be the first since 11 June when temperatures fail to reach 20C anywhere in the UK.

Thursday will start chilly with mist, fog, and some frost in places, though it will bring sunshine. Temperatures are forecast to reach around 14-16C in southern areas and 10-12C in Scotland. By Friday, Atlantic weather systems will bring more rain and stronger winds, but temperatures will recover slightly to 16-18C across much of the south.

The cooler spell is not expected to last, with temperatures anticipated to return towards average over the weekend and potentially slightly above average next week.

Why this matters: The change marks a noticeable shift after an extended period of unusually warm weather for early October.
