UK to ban imports from illegal Israeli settlements and sanction individuals

The UK government has announced new measures to ban imports of goods from illegal Israeli settlements and target individuals and companies supporting such activity.

  • The UK has deemed Israel's ongoing occupation of Palestinian territory unlawful.
  • New measures include banning imports of goods from illegal Israeli settlements into the UK.
  • The government will also take action against individuals and companies that support or profit from illegal settlement activity.

The UK government has announced new powers to address what it describes as a deteriorating situation in Palestine, including a ban on imports of goods from illegal Israeli settlements. The Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, confirmed that the UK has independently concluded Israel's continued occupation of Palestinian territory is unlawful, aligning with an International Court of Justice ruling.

Under the new plans, the government will also create designation powers to target individuals and companies that support, facilitate, or profit from illegal settlement activity. Additionally, there will be a ban on advertising or promotion of land and property in illegal settlements.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that these targeted measures are aimed at supporting a two-state solution, not at the Israeli people. The announcement comes as part of joint action with France and Canada to restrict trade with settlements, and follows similar steps taken by Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Norway.

The government also announced the reimposition of major economic sanctions on Iran, targeting its key sectors and expanding the UK's ability to sanction vessels involved in supporting Iran's nuclear programme.

Why this matters: The UK government states these measures are intended to protect the viability of a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians, which it considers at risk due to accelerating settlement expansion and settler violence.

What this means for you: You will no longer be able to purchase goods imported into the UK that originate from illegal Israeli settlements.
