Against this backdrop, the United Kingdom has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the principles of the UN Charter at the UN Security Council meeting on Peaceful Settlement of Disputes, where UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Archie Young, urged Member States to utilise the full toolkit of the Charter in resolving escalating global conflicts.
Ambassador Young highlighted a series of pressing international challenges, including Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which has brought devastating humanitarian consequences and economic repercussions for the UK. He also cited the brutal war in Sudan, the ongoing crisis in Gaza, and rising regional tensions across the Middle East as pressing concerns that require immediate diplomatic attention.
The UK representative reiterated the fundamental principle that there is no justification for unprovoked aggression against another state. In this context, Russia was once again urged to cease its aggression in Ukraine, agree to a full ceasefire, and engage in meaningful negotiations towards a lasting peace. For Sudan, Ambassador Young called for an urgent humanitarian truce between warring parties, while in Gaza, all parties were implored to fulfil commitments under the comprehensive plan to end the conflict and achieve enduring peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Noting that sustainable peace requires more than just initial agreements, the UK emphasised the necessity of sustained international support. The UN Verification Mission in Colombia was cited as a successful model for long-term international backing in upholding commitments. Furthermore, the statement highlighted the crucial role of UN peace operations in preventing escalation and maintaining stability, leveraging the organisation's unique legitimacy and impartiality.
Inclusivity was also identified as a critical factor in ensuring the longevity of peace agreements. Ambassador Young pointed out that historical data demonstrates that peace agreements are 35% more likely to last at least 15 years when women are meaningfully involved in the peace processes. Concluding his address, Ambassador Young echoed the new Foreign Secretary's recent remarks, asserting that in this era of international instability, the principles at the heart of the UN Charter must be defended with even greater vigour.
