The UK has warned countries globally that the climate and nature crises, alongside the anticipated El Niño, pose threats to national security and defence. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband presented these findings to foreign ministers from the EU, Kenya, and other nations at a private meeting during the UN general assembly in New York on Wednesday night.
The presentation was based on a report by UK spy chiefs, which concluded that the collapse of natural systems worldwide could result in conflict, migration, and food shortages. This report was reportedly suppressed under Keir Starmer.
Mr Miliband stated that the coming El Niño, intensified by climate breakdown, would severely test global food systems. He also announced plans to appoint a new special representative for climate security and establish a ministerial taskforce focused on the national security and resilience risks of a changing climate and nature loss.
Additionally, Mr Miliband announced £330 million in funding for the Global Environment Facility, intended to protect critical ecosystems in developing countries.
