The UK's fight against obesity has just received a boost with the approval of Novo Nordisk's groundbreaking weight-loss drug Wegovy in pill form. This convenient new option mimics the natural hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which helps regulate appetite and digestion, making it easier for some people to manage their weight without the hassle of weekly injections.
Wegovy tablets don't need refrigeration, making them a more accessible option for those who struggle with administering injections. While the exact cost in the UK hasn't been confirmed yet, when Wegovy was launched in the US, the starting dose of 1.5mg was priced at around £110 per month.
The National Pharmacy Association has welcomed this development, saying it could help patients who are unable or prefer not to take the injectable version. In the long term, this pill may also bring down treatment costs, according to Olivier Picard, chair of the association.
Trials have shown Wegovy to be safe and effective in helping people lose weight – but users should note that it can take several months to achieve full benefits, and there is a risk that weight may return once the medication stops. As with all medications, there's also a chance of side effects, including nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and vomiting.
