The UK's employment landscape is increasingly strained, with workplace disputes on the rise and tribunal cases costing businesses dearly. The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) warns that a boost in mediation skills is desperately needed to prevent conflicts from escalating into costly and lengthy proceedings. With the number of workplace disputes having increased by 10% over the past year, according to a recent survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), it's clear that employers are struggling to manage workplace tensions effectively.
Acas has responded with a new initiative aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing their mediation skills. The programme will provide employers with training and guidance on implementing effective mediation practices, including how to identify potential conflicts, facilitate mediation sessions, and develop a tailored mediation policy that suits their organisation's needs.
By improving mediation skills, employers can reduce the risk of absenteeism, presenteeism, and turnover, which have a significant impact on business performance. Effective mediation can also boost employee engagement and morale, leading to a more positive work environment and increased productivity. Acas estimates that resolving disputes quickly can save businesses an average of £1,300 per case, making it a cost-effective solution for employers.
Acas' new initiative is timely, given the recent surge in workplace disputes. The CIPD survey found that bullying, harassment, and grievances remain major sources of conflict, with many employees feeling unsupported or ignored by their employers. By providing SMEs with the tools they need to resolve conflicts effectively, Acas hopes to reduce the number of disputes and promote a more harmonious work environment.
