Leigh Leopards centre Umyla Hanley has been named in England's 40-man training squad for the Rugby League World Cup. The call-up comes two years after Hanley was working on a building site.
Hanley made his Super League debut six years ago for Wigan but was later loaned to Newcastle. His former Wigan boss, Adrian Lam, offered him another chance at Leigh, where a switch from wing to centre proved to be a turning point. Leigh's Super League record with Hanley at centre is 34-14.
England coach Brian McDermott added Hanley to the training squad on Friday. Despite the competition for places among seven centres in the 40-man group, Lam believes Hanley should be selected for the final 23-man squad. Hanley is averaging a try every two games this year in Super League.
Meanwhile, London Broncos secured their first trophy since 1983 with a 58-12 win over Halifax, claiming the Championship Leaders' Shield. Coach Jason Demetriou stated that most players not already contracted elsewhere would stay if the club is guaranteed a Super League spot in 2028.
