Sussex's promising all-rounder, James Coles, has been named in the England T20 squad for the upcoming five-match series against India, a significant milestone for the 22-year-old who is yet to make his senior international debut. His selection underscores a remarkable period of form, highlighted by a career-best unbeaten 224 in a County Championship fixture against Glamorgan earlier this month.
Coles's prowess extends beyond the longer format, with an impressive showing in last season's T20 Blast. During the tournament, he accumulated 397 runs at an average of 33 and claimed 10 wickets, maintaining an economy rate just over nine runs per over. His talent was also recognised in The Hundred, where he was secured by London Spirit for a sum of £390,000 this year, reflecting his growing stature in domestic cricket.
The England squad, which will be captained by Harry Brook, features a mix of returning players and those making a comeback. Jordan Cox, Sonny Baker, and Saqib Mahmood are all set to return, while injuries have ruled out Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton. Notably, Test opener Ben Duckett, who was part of the squad that competed in this year's T20 World Cup semi-final, has not been included.
Marcus North, an England selector, commented on Coles's inclusion, stating, "James Coles is an exciting addition and has earned his place." He further explained the rationale behind selecting a larger squad: "We have selected a larger squad to accommodate for the fact that this series will begin shortly after the Test series against New Zealand is due to conclude, which allows us to be flexible."
The series is scheduled to commence on 1st July at Chester-le-Street, with subsequent matches taking place in Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol, and concluding on 11th July in Southampton. Cricket fans could also witness a potential encounter with 15-year-old Indian prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is expected to feature for the touring side.
