The University of Birmingham's Meal Deal Society, originally founded before the Covid-19 pandemic, has been revived for the current academic year and is rapidly gaining popularity. The society already boasts more than 100 members.
Its first event, a trip to a Selly Oak supermarket where students chose their preferred meal deal combinations, proved to be a major hit online. A TikTok video documenting the outing has accumulated over a million views, bringing unexpected attention to the group.
Society president Finlay noted that choosing the perfect meal deal involves balancing personal taste with value for money. Members Maya and Finlay both opted for a chocolate croissant as their snack of choice when discussing meal deals with BBC Radio WM.
Membership for the society costs £3.85, and new members receive a free meal deal. Beyond the food, organisers state the society aims to bring students together through group outings, picnics, pub crawls, and quizzes, with discussions underway to hold more events due to demand.
