The Earth is unlikely to become over-full with manufactured items, as storage space is not considered the primary problem. Instead, unsustainable consumption in its various forms is highlighted as a more significant issue, extending beyond consumer capitalism.
One group has calculated an "Earth overshoot day," which currently falls on 30 July. This date signifies when humanity has used more ecological resources and services than the Earth can naturally regenerate within a year. The UN suggests that moving this date back by five or six days annually could achieve equilibrium by approximately 2050.
Some responses suggest that while manufactured items may not physically fill the planet, the process of creating new, often unnecessary, items from raw materials could lead to toxic residues and pollutants, potentially making human life on Earth nearly impossible. The habitability of the planet is seen by some as likely to collapse before a lack of storage space becomes an issue.
