The New Style Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) has undergone significant updates, potentially affecting thousands of UK households reliant on this benefit. These changes aim to streamline the claiming process and reflect evolving healthcare practices while winding down temporary measures introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
One key development from 1 July 2022 is the broadening of medical professionals who can provide fit notes for claims. GPs, hospital doctors are now joined by registered nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and physiotherapists in being authorised to issue these crucial documents, potentially easing pressure on GP surgeries and speeding up the claims process.
The criteria for claimants nearing the end of their life have been revised, with individuals informed they may have less than 12 months to live automatically placed in the 'support group' without needing an initial appointment or Claimant Commitment. This change aims to provide more compassionate support during a challenging time, previously requiring a six-month threshold.
The New Style ESA also sees standardisation of audio recording for all telephone and face-to-face health assessments, enhancing transparency and record-keeping. Temporary eligibility rules introduced during the coronavirus pandemic have been removed, returning to pre-pandemic benefit application criteria. Moreover, individuals receiving both Universal Credit and New Style ESA will see their Universal Credit payment reduced by the amount they receive from New Style ESA.
