The US is grappling with its largest cyclosporiasis outbreak on record, with over 11,500 suspected cases across nine states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The agency has confirmed 4,173 laboratory-confirmed cases of the illness and is investigating a further 7,400 suspected cases. This widespread contamination highlights the complexities of food safety, particularly with regard to fresh produce, which accounts for the majority of cyclosporiasis cases.
Initially, the CDC's investigation focused on five states: Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. The probe has since expanded to include Illinois, Oklahoma, and Pennsylvania. Notably, 41 states have reported cyclosporiasis cases, but investigators are still determining how many of these are directly connected to the current nine-state outbreak.
The initial cluster of cases was linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell restaurants. Subsequent testing revealed that this contaminated lettuce came from a single supplier, Taylor Farms de Mexico, which has since initiated a voluntary recall of the product. Cyclosporiasis is caused by the cyclospora parasite, a microscopic protozoan that can contaminate raw produce through contact with faeces. Symptoms are severe and often include explosive and watery diarrhoea that can persist for several weeks.
Separately, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced an investigation into 72 additional cyclosporiasis cases. At present, these cases have not been definitively linked to any specific product or products, suggesting that other potential contamination pathways may exist or emerge.
The scale of this outbreak underscores the importance of stringent hygiene and testing protocols throughout the food supply chain to prevent widespread public health incidents. The incident also raises questions about the efficacy of current food safety measures, particularly with regard to fresh produce, which is increasingly sourced from global suppliers.
