The United States has announced a relaxation of travel restrictions for the Iranian World Cup football team, permitting them to enter the country two days ahead of their next fixture. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the change on Tuesday, though the team will still be required to depart following Friday's game in Seattle.
A representative for the Iran Football Federation verified that the squad is scheduled to travel from their current base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, to Seattle on Wednesday. This adjustment comes after the Iranian team voiced significant complaints regarding the travel limitations imposed on them since the outbreak of war, which they argued caused considerable difficulties.
For their initial two matches in Los Angeles, the team was only allowed to travel the day before each game. This contrasted with their requests for additional time to acclimatise to host cities and facilitate post-match recovery, a standard practice for many international teams despite FIFA regulations typically allowing travel a day prior to a match.
Andrew Giuliani, the executive director of the White House FIFA Task Force, indicated that the decision was part of a pre-planned assessment. He stated, "This was planned on our end. We were going to look at how the first two movements went, and if they went smoothly, we would extend the extra day in light of the longer travel time." This move addresses some of the concerns raised by players, including Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who had expressed hopes for earlier travel to adapt to the Seattle location.
The easing of restrictions also follows a gesture of goodwill from the Iranian national team, who left a handwritten note of gratitude in their SoFi Stadium locker room in Los Angeles after their recent draw against Belgium. The message, released by Iran's football federation, thanked Los Angeles for its hospitality and conveyed a call for peace, respect, and friendship among all nations. Several team officials and support staff had previously been denied entry to the US with the team when their base camp was relocated from Tucson, Arizona, to Mexico.
