US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) made record arrests and deportations in July, apprehending 1,500 people and removing 1,100 daily. The Guardian reported that over half of those arrested in July had no criminal convictions or pending charges, despite ICE claiming to target undocumented migrants who commit violent crimes.
In June, the Supreme Court allowed the expiration of temporary protected status (TPS) for Haitians, leaving approximately 350,000 people at risk of deportation. This decision means more than 1 million TPS holders from 13 nations, previously deemed too unsafe for return, are now vulnerable to deportation. Many of these individuals have lived and worked legally in the US for years.
The Economist reports that legal tactics have left an additional 1.7 million immigrants open to deportation. The White House has also sought to deport immigrants for protected political speech, with a federal judge last week ruling visa cancellations for noncitizen students' pro-Palestinian advocacy unconstitutional.
The Brookings Institution thinktank estimates that over 100,000 children, with three-quarters likely being US citizens, have been separated from their parents during Mr Trump's second term.
