Graham Platner's US Senate campaign in Maine has been dealt a severe blow after a damning accusation of sexual assault emerged, casting a dark cloud over his bid to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins. According to Politico, Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old woman who previously dated Mr Platner, alleges that he forced himself on her despite her repeated objections in late 2021.
Ms Racicot's account paints a distressing picture of an intoxicated Mr Platner entering her home uninvited and overpowering her during their tumultuous relationship, which lasted over two years. She maintains that she told him to stop multiple times, believing him to be 'almost blackout drunk' at the time. Following this alleged encounter, Ms Racicot severed all ties with Mr Platner.
Politico's report cites corroborating evidence from a man Ms Racicot confided in, as well as emails and messages from her therapist, where she warned an acquaintance about Mr Platner several years prior to his Senate campaign. These documents suggest that Ms Racicot was concerned about Mr Platner's behaviour towards women long before he entered the political fray.
In response to the allegations, Mr Platner denied any wrongdoing, stating that 'any accusation of non-consensual behaviour is categorically untrue.' His campaign dismissed the claims as 'coached and coordinated by out-of-state establishment operatives,' implying a wider effort to discredit his candidacy. However, this latest scandal comes on the heels of previous controversies surrounding Mr Platner's social media comments and a Nazi-aligned tattoo, which he has since covered up.
Ms Racicot was among several women who spoke out about their experiences with Mr Platner in June, when The New York Times published an exposé on his 'unsettling' behaviour towards women he dated. However, at that time, she chose not to disclose the full extent of her allegations, citing a desire not to be seen as a victim.
With just over a week remaining before a crucial ballot deadline, Mr Platner's campaign is facing increased scrutiny and pressure to address these serious allegations head-on. His commitment to fighting for Maine, despite these challenges, remains unshaken – but the damage to his reputation may prove irreparable in the eyes of voters.
