The US Senate on Thursday rejected a resolution intended to limit President Donald Trump’s authority to wage war in Iran. The measure, described as largely symbolic, failed in a 49-50 vote.
This vote follows a "heavy wave" of retaliatory airstrikes conducted by the US in Iran. The US military stated it launched new airstrikes on Wednesday in response to an Iranian missile attack on a US base in Jordan, escalating the conflict after a ceasefire collapsed.
The war, which began on 28 February, has now lasted over five months. According to Pentagon figures, at least 18 US service members have been killed and more than 450 wounded. Thousands of Iranian civilians and combatants are estimated to have died.
A new poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, released on Thursday, found that approximately two-thirds of US adults believe the war has not been worthwhile.
