The United States State Department's scathing indictment of Cuban subversion has sparked fresh tensions in Washington, with allegations that Havana has successfully infiltrated the highest echelons of American government. A 100-page report, released on Monday, paints a damning picture of Cuba as the "capital of 21st-century communism," where generations of activists have been cultivated to undermine US interests.
As part of what appears to be an escalating campaign against left-leaning organisations, the report identifies several prominent individuals and groups as "front groups and fellow travellers" for Cuba. Those named include Hasan Piker, founder of the Amazon Labor Union Chris Smalls, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), Isra Hirsi – daughter of Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and journalist Amy Goodman. The inclusion of these individuals is reportedly based on their criticism of US policy towards Cuba or involvement in Cuba solidarity movements.
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) emerges as a particular focus of the report, which suggests it has become a "potent illustration" of Cuba's ideological influence. The document alleges that the DSA maintains a "fierce, almost religious commitment to the cause of the Cuban regime," but attributes this not to direct control by Cuban agents, rather to its adoption as "the de facto policy orthodoxy on the American far left."
Coming just days after Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced further sanctions on Cuba's tourism ministry and state-owned companies, the report is likely to fuel a contentious debate over Washington's approach to Havana. The US has maintained an economic embargo on Cuba for over six decades, with additional sanctions imposed by various administrations.
Havana and international critics, including human rights organisations, argue that these measures have crippled the island's economy and severely impacted its 9.6 million residents. Earlier this month, Cuba experienced its third nationwide blackout in six months, coinciding with an oil blockade imposed by the Trump administration.
