The US military has conducted strikes on Iranian targets, responding to an attack by Tehran on American forces in Jordan on Wednesday. This action follows a days-long pause in hostilities between the two sides and has heightened fears of a return to widespread conflict in the region.
President Donald Trump had earlier vowed to hit Iran "very hard" after the attack on a base in Jordan hosting US troops. US Central Command stated in a social media post that over two hours, dozens of targets belonging to Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corp were struck, including military command centres, missile and drone facilities, and coastal surveillance sites.
Iranian state media reported two people were injured on the island of Qeshm in the Strait of Hormuz, with explosions also noted in Khuzestan province. These strikes occurred after the US and Saudi Arabia jointly attacked Iran-backed militias in Iraq on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 fighters and six Iranian advisers.
Separately, drone strikes reportedly ignited fires on two natural gas vessels at the Egyptian port of Damietta, according to British maritime security firm Ambrey. One vessel was US-owned and the other Greek-owned; no injuries were reported. When asked if Iran was responsible for these strikes, President Trump responded, "It's a little more of the same."
