US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stated that the government's significant buyback of US bonds was a success. This claim was made as the 10-year treasury yield reached a 19-year high on Tuesday, increasing pressure on interest rates.
The 10-year treasury yield, which influences rates for loans such as mortgages and credit card debt, hit 5.041% on Tuesday. This marks its highest level since 2007. Treasury yields typically rise when demand for bonds decreases.
The US Treasury announced in August that it would triple its government debt buyback from $2bn to $6bn in an effort to reduce bond yields. Despite yields continuing to rise, Bessent told Congress on Tuesday that the operations were "the two most successful treasury auctions that we've had in 20 years."
The Federal Reserve is scheduled to announce any changes to the interest rate on Wednesday. The central bank is largely anticipated to raise rates for the first time since July 2023, a move that could help mitigate prices.
