US withdraws all bombers from RAF Fairford base

The US has removed all its bombers from RAF Fairford, following an incident on 27 September that led to multiple arrests.

  • The US confirmed on Sunday, 4 October 2026, that all bombers deployed to RAF Fairford have been re-deployed to their home stations in America.
  • The withdrawal follows a major incident on 27 September when police were alerted to "suspicious vehicles" near the airbase.
  • Six men, including a UK-Iranian national, were arrested on suspicion of terror offences and subsequently released on bail.

The United States has withdrawn all its bombers from RAF Fairford, a British military base, a US department official confirmed on Sunday. The bombers have been re-deployed to their home stations in America.

The US did not provide a reason for the withdrawal. However, it follows a major incident on 27 September when counter-terror police were alerted to three "suspicious vehicles" near the Gloucestershire airbase.

Five UK nationals were initially arrested on suspicion of explosives offences and later on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act, before being released on bail. A sixth man, a UK-Iranian national, was also later arrested in London on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts and subsequently released on bail.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated days after the incident that there were "strong indications" of Iranian involvement, a claim Tehran has strongly denied.
