A member of the public in Margate has been lauded by Kent Police for his quick-thinking actions, after he offered an armed officer a lift to help apprehend a suspect fleeing on foot. The incident, which occurred on 16th June, saw the motorist pull over to assist officers who were in pursuit of an individual following an assault on High Street.
Footage from the officer's body-worn camera captures the moment the van driver stopped, telling the officer, "Get in the back." The armed officer quickly entered the vehicle, with the sliding door remaining open, and instructed the driver to "Go, go, go! Cheers buddy. Follow that police officer." The driver then accelerated in the direction of the suspect, with the officer continuing to provide directions.
The pursuit intensified as the van successfully overtook both the fleeing suspect and another officer who was chasing on foot. Once ahead, the van pulled over, allowing the armed officer to exit, train his weapon on the individual, and make the arrest. The unnamed driver, who had observed heavily armed police struggling to keep pace with the suspect, expressed his satisfaction after the event, stating he was "just glad I could be of service. That was quite exhilarating."
Superintendent Will Lay of Kent Police extended his gratitude, highlighting the crucial role the driver played. "Thanks to the quick and selfless actions of this responsible and public-spirited driver, officers were able to apprehend the dangerous individual," Supt Lay commented. He added that the successful arrest might not have been possible without the member of the public and his vehicle, emphasising that the driver should feel proud of his contribution to community safety.
This act of public assistance underscores the potential for ordinary citizens to play a significant role in supporting emergency services. The incident serves as a reminder of the unexpected ways in which individuals can contribute to maintaining law and order, particularly in high-pressure situations.
