Michael Vaughan has suggested that England could face a challenge managing what he described as "the most high-profile coaching team in the world" following Kevin Pietersen's appointment as white-ball batting mentor. Pietersen's 12-year estrangement from the national team concluded with the announcement that he would join the limited-overs set-up for the next 12 months, leading up to next year's World Cup in South Africa.
Vaughan, who captained Pietersen early in his international career, believes the decision could be successful but cautioned that a backroom team led by Brendon McCullum and Pietersen might overshadow the playing group. He told the Overlap’s Stick to Cricket podcast, "I like it but it has a bit of a concern to me, that suddenly the management becomes more profiled than the players."
The former England captain also praised the England and Wales Cricket Board for hiring Pietersen, who has previously been a vocal critic of the regime. Vaughan highlighted Pietersen's professionalism during their playing days, stating, "There was no-one who worked harder in my time as an England cricketer than Kevin. He’ll definitely bring that drive to the team."
