Two vehicles, a black van and a blue Range Rover, became stranded in the sea at North Bay in Scarborough on Friday evening, caught by the rising tide. The incident, which occurred around 6pm BST, prompted a response from HM Coastguard and North Yorkshire Police.
It is understood that the vehicles were involved in activities related to jet skis, potentially either dropping them off or collecting them from the popular North Yorkshire beach. HM Coastguard confirmed receiving a call at approximately 18:00 BST and despatched its local rescue team to the scene. Their primary focus was to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected, offering advice and assistance.
While the Coastguard provided initial safety guidance, the responsibility for recovering the vehicles from the beach rested with their owners. Both vehicles have since been successfully removed from the sands. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with the incident.
North Bay is one of Scarborough's two main beaches and is a well-known spot for water sports enthusiasts. However, public vehicle access to the sands is typically restricted by the local council. Access is usually granted only to licensed commercial operators and emergency services, highlighting the unusual nature of this occurrence.
The incident serves as a timely reminder of the unpredictable nature of coastal environments and the importance of adhering to local regulations regarding beach access, particularly concerning tidal movements. Even experienced operators can be caught out by rapidly changing conditions.
