Max Verstappen has secured his and Red Bull's inaugural pole position of the 2026 season with a dominant qualifying performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. Verstappen, whose last pole and victory came at the 2026 season finale in Abu Dhabi, was 0.298 seconds faster than Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, having topped all three qualifying sessions.
Red Bull's Isack Hadjar initially qualified third but faces a five-place grid penalty. This penalty will promote championship leader Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes to third place on the grid. Antonelli's closest rival and teammate, George Russell, could only manage eighth fastest.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc secured fifth fastest, ahead of the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Fernando Alonso delivered Aston Martin's best qualifying position of the year with 12th place, following his confirmation to remain in F1 for at least another year in 2027.
Red Bull introduced an aerodynamic upgrade at the previous race in Azerbaijan, which appears to have significantly boosted their performance at the demanding Sepang track. Verstappen described the achievement as "fantastic," noting the team's efforts across many grands prix to secure pole position.
Mercedes, despite bringing their first major upgrade since June's Canadian Grand Prix, did not see the hoped-for improvement. Antonelli, who had a compromised qualifying programme, stated that with another set of tyres, he "could have fought for front row."
