Victorian Premier Ben Carroll has unveiled his new cabinet, which was sworn in at Government House on Tuesday morning, one week after he became premier. The reshuffle includes significant changes to portfolios, with some being abolished entirely.
Among the portfolios removed are the standalone transport infrastructure and Suburban Rail Loop roles, which were prominent under previous governments. The cost of living and the men and boys portfolios have also been scrapped. Carroll stated that ministers responsible for health, roads, and public transport should oversee infrastructure within their own portfolios, and that all portfolios should focus on easing cost-of-living pressures. Deputy Premier Gabrielle Williams will take on responsibilities for gender equality.
The cabinet has also been slimmed down, with two vacancies remaining unfilled. Carroll confirmed this on Monday, stating it was a "simple measure" to show respect for taxpayers' money. Colin Brooks has been elevated to Treasurer, and Gabrielle Williams is the new Education Minister. Paul Edbrooke has also been promoted, taking on the police, emergency services, and crime prevention portfolios.
The cabinet was expected to meet on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the terms of reference for Carroll's promised royal commission into the construction industry.
