The murder of Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative commentator, has taken a significant step towards resolution with the presentation of video evidence during a preliminary hearing. The footage, shown by the Utah County Attorney's Office, purportedly captures the suspect, Tyler James Robinson, entering the Utah Valley University campus and subsequently climbing onto a rooftop from which a fatal shot was allegedly fired at Kirk.
Prosecutors in Utah are pursuing an aggravated murder charge against Robinson, aged 23, who is also facing the possibility of the death penalty. The preliminary hearing, scheduled to last five days, is a critical stage where the state must demonstrate to a district judge that there is sufficient evidence to warrant a full trial.
David Hull, a former agent with the Utah State Bureau of Investigation, narrated the videos for the court during Tuesday's proceedings. He described footage allegedly showing Robinson arriving on campus, leaving, and later returning in different attire, as well as accessing a rooftop where he ran, assumed a prone position until a shot was fired at 12:23, before descending from the roof and departing the campus.
The prosecution has also presented DNA evidence allegedly connecting Robinson to the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting. Furthermore, they claim that a note left for his roommate and romantic partner constitutes a confession.
Kirk's family, including his widow Erika Kirk, were present in court alongside Robinson on Tuesday, amidst a sombre atmosphere. Notably, Donald Trump Jr., a close associate of Kirk's, also attended the hearing earlier this week. The case has been marked by intense media attention and public interest.
The prosecution has indicated that certain videos presented to the court have been disputed by the defence, who argue that 'circled highlights' and other modifications intended to aid viewer comprehension are misleading or inaccurate. The proceedings will continue over the next few days as both sides present their cases.
