Viking has expanded its fleet with the delivery of the Viking Sekhmet, its tenth river cruise ship dedicated to the Nile. A delivery ceremony for the vessel was held this week at the Massara shipyard in Cairo, Egypt.
Named after an ancient Egyptian goddess of war, the Viking Sekhmet is 236 feet long and can host 82 guests across 41 cabins. Its design features a distinctive square bow and an indoor and outdoor Aquavit Terrace, consistent with Viking’s Scandinavian aesthetic.
The new ship will operate Viking’s established 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, as well as a new 12-day Total Eclipse on the Nile itinerary scheduled for 2027. These journeys typically include a three-night hotel stay in Cairo, followed by an eight-day roundtrip cruise on the Nile after a flight to Luxor.
Leah Talactac, president and chief executive of Viking, stated that the arrival of the Viking Sekhmet offers “even more opportunities for curious travellers to explore Egypt in Viking comfort.” Prices for these itineraries start from £5,495 per person, covering flights, transfers, onboard meals, tips, wifi, and excursions.
Viking plans further fleet expansion, anticipating the delivery of 19 additional river ships by 2028, 11 ocean ships by 2032, and two expedition ships by 2031. This includes two hydrogen-powered ocean cruise ships designed for zero exhaust emissions during parts of their voyages.
