Vingegaard ruled out for rest of 2026 after Tour crash

Jonas Vingegaard will not race again in 2026 as he recovers from a collarbone fracture sustained in a crash at the Tour de France. His team, Visma-Lease a Bike, confirmed the decision to end his season early.

  • Vingegaard fractured his collarbone in a crash on stage 15 of the Tour de France and abandoned the race.
  • He was second overall behind Tadej Pogacar at the time of the crash.
  • He will focus on preparing for the 2027 season.

Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard will not race for the remainder of 2026 as he continues to recover from a collarbone fracture.

The Dane was second in the overall classification behind eventual champion Tadej Pogacar when he crashed on stage 15 of this year's Tour and abandoned as a result.

His Visma-Lease a Bike team announced that he will end his season early to focus on recovery and training for next year, “to lay the foundations for another successful season”.

Vingegaard said in a statement: “After a long and intense racing period, a recovery period was planned after the Tour de France anyway. Due to the collarbone injury, the start of my training has been delayed and it is not possible for me to get back to top level in the coming period. The focus is on preparing optimally for the goals of the 2027 season.”

The team added that he is still experiencing the effects of the fracture and cannot work towards new racing goals for 2026 in the short term.

Why this matters: Vingegaard's absence removes a major contender from the remaining races of the 2026 season, including the Vuelta a España and the World Championships.

What this means for you: Cycling fans will not see Vingegaard compete in the remaining major races of 2026, including the Vuelta a España and the World Championships.
