Dutch cyclist Demi Vollering has continued her exceptional season by winning the women's road race world title in Montreal. Vollering, 29, held off a late challenge from Poland's Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney to claim victory in four hours 45 minutes nine seconds.
This latest triumph adds to an impressive collection of titles for Vollering this season, which includes wins at the Tour de France Femmes, Giro d'Italia Women, and other World Championships. She also secured several one-day classics in the spring, such as the Tour of Flanders and Liege-Bastogne-Liege.
Vollering initiated her decisive attack with approximately 40km remaining. Despite being reeled in by the chasing pack over the final two laps, she launched another effort in the closing stages, with Niewiadoma-Phinney staying on her wheel before being beaten to the line. Italian Elisa Longo Borghini secured the bronze medal, narrowly ahead of world time-trial champion Marlen Reusser.
Great Britain's Flora Perkins was among 15 riders who crashed early in the race while speeding downhill. Defending champion Magdeleine Vallieres, Mauritius' Kimberley Le Court, and Spain's Paula Blasi were also involved in the incident and later withdrew.
