A severe heatwave is gripping the UK, with temperatures soaring to 30.8C in Northern Ireland on Thursday. For many, the heat is a welcome respite from the usual British weather, but for others, it poses a significant challenge. Brian Shields, who lives with multiple sclerosis, is one of those affected. Before his diagnosis, Shields would have been out sunbathing, but now he is forced to stay in the shade or a cool room to avoid his muscles weakening.
Shields receives visits from home carers four times a day, who help him manage during periods of hot weather. Community care assistant Kate McMullan said the soaring temperatures have made conditions more challenging for both carers and the people they support. 'This week and especially today has been quite difficult,' she said. 'Making sure that we have plenty of water in the car when we're travelling to see service users, because the cars have been extremely warm.'
The Met Office has issued heatwave warnings for the UK, with temperatures expected to remain high throughout the week. For those struggling to cope with the heat, it's essential to take precautions. Staying hydrated, wearing light and loose clothing, and seeking shade or air-conditioned spaces can all help to alleviate the effects of the heat. Carers and healthcare professionals are also providing critical support to vulnerable individuals, ensuring they have access to water, cooling measures, and medical care if needed.
