The Welsh hockey team's dream of glory on the world stage is facing a very real test – not just on the pitch, but in the bank account. With their eyes firmly fixed on the Hockey World Cup, the squad has launched a £40,000 crowdfunding drive to help cover the costs of competing against the best teams from around the globe.
And what a story they have to tell so far! Their place at the August tournament was secured after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Poland in Santiago, Chile, back in March. That's two World Cups in a row for this plucky Welsh side – a remarkable achievement for a programme that's largely made up of amateur players.
It's no easy ride, though. Many players have day jobs or are balancing demanding academic commitments with their hockey duties. Travel costs can be crippling for these individuals, who often foot the bill themselves for international trips. It's a constant juggling act – and one that Jack Pritchard knows all too well.
"It's a difficult balance to get right between training and the day job," Pritchard said after Wales' 5-0 qualifying win over Scotland. "We're not just playing for ourselves; we've got families, jobs, and mortgages back home." The team travels from all corners of the UK – London, Nottingham, Birmingham – to train together.
For Paul Whapham, CEO of Hockey Wales, the financial pressures are intense. With a total World Cup prep cost of £150,000 looming large, they've got just four months to secure it all. But Whapham's confident that the team's presence at the World Cup will be a game-changer for Welsh hockey – inspiring the next generation and drawing in new talent at grassroots level.
Before heading off to the Netherlands, Wales will face England and Australia in warm-up matches, followed by games against Spain and three Test matches against Chile in Cardiff. Their pool stage fixtures include encounters with India, Pakistan, and fellow Home Nation, England – a tough draw for sure!
