A wallaby was observed hopping through the streets of Liskeard, Cornwall, early on Monday morning. A pastry shop owner reported seeing the marsupial at about 05:30 BST while driving to work.
Devon and Cornwall Police were called to Dean Street following reports of the sighting. Officers conducted a search of the area but were unable to find the wallaby.
The RSPCA stated that wallabies are considered established in the wild in Britain, often as a result of escaping captivity. The charity advises anyone who spots a wallaby to watch from afar and not attempt to approach it. If an injured wallaby is found, the RSPCA asks the public to monitor it from a distance and contact their emergency line.
The government's website indicates that a licence from a local council is required to keep wild animals such as marsupials, which are classified as wild, dangerous, or exotic.
